Water Quality Statement - River Wey Navigation
Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development (SOLD) take our responsibility towards our customers very seriously ensuring the water quality is good for water-based activities on and in the River Wey Navigation.
Recent reports have indicated that sewerage has on occasions entered the River Wey Navigation.
In order to reassure our customers, as the river is free flowing this reduces the build-up of pollutants.
However, there are occasions that do raise our concerns and the following responses help to negate the risk:
- We undertake water tests which are sent to a laboratory on a regular basis
- Tests are undertaken all year round and increase when there are concerns or flooding
- The tests conform to EC Bathing Water Directive and do include E. Coli and Enterococci
If there is any increase in test outcomes or water quality, the following actions will take place:
- Activities may change to reduce risk of submersion in the water
- Hand sanitisation undertaken
- Showering after activity
- Should SOLD identify high risks then we will suspend "in the water" activities and "on the water" activities will be risk assessed for suitability
There are also regular communications from agencies about water quality that help us make good decisions.
If conditions are deemed not appropriate, SOLD will offer alternative activities for the young people.
The general and average water quality in the Wey Navigation has not provided any concerns for several years, with regular testing and communications from agencies, we continue to monitor and take a proactive approach to enjoy the Wey Navigation safely.
