Outdoor and Adventurous Activity (OAA)
Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) is the unit of work within the PE National Curriculum at Key Stage 2 and 3.
Outdoor learning can be financed by the School Sport Premium Funding.
It can be delivered in a number of ways, but Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development (SOLD) recommend that 6 PE(Physical Education) lessons per year group at Key Stage 2 have an Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) focus.
It is suggested that 3 of these lessons focus on orienteering and the other 3 lessons focus on team building and problem solving tasks outdoors.
Orienteering is an excellent activity to introduce to a school as it has the ability to teach a number of cross-curricular themes as well as Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) in PE.
For example, it is an excellent way of teaching geography, numeracy, literacy and science in an engaging and physically active way. Basic orienteering skills can be taught in a progressive way in school grounds using basic inexpensive equipment.
For more technical skills and for teaching the National Curriculum, having a professionally drawn orienteering map and orienteering course set up in school grounds is a very useful resource.
SOLD offers an orienteering mapping package which includes:
- Professionally drawn digital orienteering map of the school grounds
- 20 permanent orienteering plaques to fix in school grounds
- Purple Pen Software and induction in using it which allows the school to easily create different orienteering courses around the school grounds.
- Support with setting orienteering up in the school
- A resource of orienteering activity ideas.
Approximate cost of this orienteering package. Price on application.
SOLD also offers the option of some twilight or INSET day orienteering training for the whole staff team.
Team building and problem solving tasks are another great way to deliver your Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) unit of work taught by teachers within school grounds.
SOLD recommends an excellent lesson plan pack called: 'Outdoor Learning Cards'.
Outdoor Learning Handbook and Cards (harveymaps.co.uk)
Outdoor Learning Cards are an excellent progressive scheme of work to support teachers in delivering orienteering activity and team building and problem solving tasks.
SOLD offers training for schools based on these cards either as twilight training or INSET days.

Sports Funding
Make the most of your Sports Premium Funding - join Surrey's Primary PE and Sport Membership Scheme and help shape the outcomes for your school, staff and pupils!
The Government is providing funding to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and school sport (collectively known as PESS) in primary schools. A recent Ofsted survey highlighted the need for clearer guidance to schools on how best to spend the funding and the need to share best practice between schools.
