Henley Fort in Guildford sets the stage for an engaging journey back in time with their living history experiences, allowing Key Stage 2 children to immerse themselves in the impact of the Second World War (WW2) on local communities.
Through hands-on activities, Key Stage 2 children get to step into the shoes of Home Guards and Air Raid Wardens, gaining a firsthand understanding of the era's challenges and sacrifices.
This exciting addition of sessions, including the existing evacuee residential programme, promises a dynamic and educational adventure for all participants during this 2-night residential school trip.
The potential session layout presented adds a touch of organised fun, ensuring each group enjoys a unique and unforgettable experience throughout their time at the fort.
This is an expansion adding additional sessions to the existing evacuee residential.
Residential activities example
Here's an example of the activities sessions layout a 2 night residential might look like for each group.
Each group could have their own unique session starting on the first day or in the afternoon if you arrive at lunch time.
Day 1
Group 1 and Group 2
- AM activity: Evacuee escorted walk in
- PM activity: Home Guard
- Evening activity: Rationing and dig for victory
Group 3 and Group 4
- AM activity: Evacuee escorted walk in
- PM activity: Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Warden
- Evening activity: Rationing and dig for victory
Day 2
Group 1 and Group 2

- Evening activity: Self-led World War (2 DVD's available)
Group 3 and Group 4
- AM activity: Blitz Defence
- PM activity: Home Guard

Day 3

- PM activity: Lunch then walk to the coach or train station Home Guard

Activity description
Collect luggage from station and escorted walk up the hill taking in evacuee activities. King George post box, plane identification, bomb craters and dropped bombs map on the field, evacuee post cards and see into Yurt's.
3-hour home guard session.
Intro to WW2, invasion of Poland creation of LDV/Home guard Dunkirk, equipment, drill, road blocks, grenades, charges, Bunker, German map of Guildford, D-day end of the war and the home guard.
3-hour ARP session.
What is ARP what did they do? Areas of responsibility, gas masks, Air raid shelters, black out room, escape hatch, stretchers, firefighting and first aid.
Session to include:
WW2 dates naughty numbers, treasure Island looking at operations starfish the creation of scaled down towns and buildings to fool German bombers into dropping their bombs on a non-inhabited area.
WW2 linked anagrams. Bomb drop location (put out a cone another group find it)
3-hour session
- Shortbread baking with WW2 recipe
- Rationing time line with clothing rationing activity
- Dig for victory including how to set out your plot of land with what you can plant when and where
- Allotment activity clearing preparing and planting seeds
How to be a Spy
This is a new session activity may include:
- Code breaker, tracking, mine field, ravine crossing including the movement of radio equipment, leaflet writing review of activities already partaken in.
- Moving in formation (single file scout out ahead then leader at front of the group when group coming to a halt all should find cover before the signal from the scout and leader to move on is given).
- Support of local resistance movements, extraction of RAF pilots to unoccupied countries and role of women in SOE and the war. (Potentially make a paper airplane spitfire with mini competition of how far can it fly).
