Outdoor education is facing an existential threat in the UK.

The Government continues to block the reopening of the sector which has been shut since March with no revenue, despite similar businesses such as boarding schools continuing to operate. The sector has met and exceeded all relevant Government guidelines and is set up to deliver as an extension of the school bubble policy that Government have deemed safe to operate.

Getting into the outdoors post lockdown!

Following the most recent government's advice and in line with schools returning gradually, we at Surrey Outdoor Learning & Development (SOLD) are pleased to advise that we are re-opening our outdoor learning centres and support services to our customers.


Safety is our main priority and our activities and programmes have been fully risk assessed resulting in the introduction of enhanced safety measures and stringent hygiene procedures, whilst ensuring socially distancing to protect our customers and staff alike.

Lockdown outdoor curriculum day

Whilst our outdoor learning centres are closed to visitors, Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development's (SOLD) Outreach team have been taking their quality outcome driven learning into local schools that are still open for keyworker children.

This week the SOLD Outreach team visited Loseley Fields Primary School and they had an amazing day with their upper KS2 children taking part in archery, problem solving and orienteering.

A bittersweet day at High Ashurst

Today is feeling a little bittersweet! Such a beautiful, sunny and warm spring day which would have been perfect for our 5th Learning Beyond the Classroom conference at High Ashurst.

Everything was ready to go, tent teepee up, motivational industry speakers, inspiring, hands on workshops, amazing food, bumper goody bag and a record number of outdoor enthusiasts in attendance. However, it just was not meant to be but we hope that everyone is staying safe and following the government's guidelines.

All is not lost as we will be ready to go on our rearranged date of 2nd October 2020.
